Groundhog Reservoir – Dolores. Colorado
It rained and thundered the day before our wedding and the sky was filled with smoke from area fires the days after. Fortunately, Mother Nature provided us with the perfect blue sky day for our wedding!

How long to plan the wedding: 2 years
Budget: $8000

Why the date 7/7/07: My grandmother was married on 7/7 so she suggested we do the same.
Wedding Site: Family cabin at Groundhog Reservoir.
The Planning
I attended the Durango Wedding Expo and used the Southwest Colorado Wedding Guide.
Derek was very involved with the planning. I am so thankful for his support and help in keeping us organized.
Our wedding party was a lot of help… and fun.
The Theme/Décor
Our color scheme was deep red, lime green and ivory.
The Flowers
Red roses, lime spider mums and Kermit mums accented with rosemary and stephanotis wrapped in ivory and lime ribbon.
The Food
Since we had a mid-afternoon wedding, we served a variety of finger foods and platters.
The Cake
We were not able to order a traditional wedding cake from our baker so we ordered several sheet cakes in a variety of flavors that included chocolate, fresh fruit and whipped cream. They were very delicious and beautiful.
The Favors
Derek made our own honey mead (wine made with honey rather than grapes) in raspberry and orange. We bottled it in 12 ounce bottles and added a personalized label.
Special Touches
1. My grandfather from Holland married us at 9,000 feet elevation!
2. My sister was my maid-of-honor.
3. I dyed my shoes deep red and also made and hand-beaded my veil.
4. Our bachelorette party was a ‘day at-the-spa’ – manicures and pedicures at Signature Salon & Spa.
What would you do Different
Take the time to select a professional DJ.
Our Advice
- Don’t forget to relax.
- If you have lots of family and friends willing to help, let them help you. It will minimize the stress of having to pull everything together yourself.
- Lean on each other.
